The manga series “Death Note” was created by Takeshi Obata and Tsugumi Ohba. It follows the exploits of Light Yagami, a young genius who one fateful day uncovers a mysterious notebook.
The notebook turns out to be a “Death Note,” a mystical relic thrown into Light’s path by a deity of death named Ryuk. Possessing a Death Note entails a great deal of responsibility, as anybody who’s name is inscribed within the notebook’s pages will perish.
Light resolves to utilize the Death Note to join the realm of serial murder to purge society of individuals he believes are immoral.
He finally attempts to rid the world of crime under the identity “Kira” — which is the English word for “killer” spelled out in Japanese katakana — a title bestowed upon him by the police (via Death Note News).
Light’s decisions have several effects, the most notable of which is the Kira Investigation Team, led by the enigmatic investigator L.
“Death Note” has produced a slew of ancillary media, ranging from a light book to a musical to live-action television and film adaptations, including a Netflix version that got mixed reviews.
The anime adaptation of the comic series began in 2006, and although only having one season, the program manages to encapsulate the primary plot of the manga series.
Fans, though, continue to scream for more. Indeed, Viz Media produced a manga named “Death Note: The a-Kira Story” in early 2020, situated in the series’ setting.
Could this result in a Season 2 of the anime “Death Note”? Who would star in it, and what would the plot be? Here is what we currently know.
Death Note Season 2 Release Date
As successful as “Death Note” is as a property, it looks as though its days as an anime are numbered – at least for the time being.
As many anime fans are likely aware, the series may be renewed years after its initial debut, so you never know what will happen. Fourteen years have passed since the first anime series was published, and the animation company Madhouse has yet to announce if a second season will be allowed, but it has not been canceled either.
Given that Season 1 of “Death Note” covers most of the manga series’ narrative, a new season would have to take inspiration from an altogether new source, most likely with a completely new storyline and primary characters.
In the United States, “Death Note” premiered on Adult Swim in 2017 and is presently accessible to watch on various platforms.
Despite this, there has been no information about the anime’s status for almost a decade. At the moment, it is hard to predict whether or not “Death Note” will ever have further episodes.
Death Note Season 2 Cast
Because any potential “Death Note” prequel or sequel would have to function without Light (Mamoru Miyano/Brad Swaile) and L (Kappei Yamaguchi/Alessandro Juliani) as main characters (see below), it’s likely that only a small number of characters and their original voice actors would be recast.
Among those expected to return is the immortal Ryuk, who was voiced by Shidô Nakamura in the anime’s original Japanese language version and Brian Drummond in the English translation (per IMDb).
Near also lives, voiced by Noriko Hidaka in the original and Cathy Weseluck in the dubbed version, as does Mello, who is portrayed in the original by Nozomu Sasaki and David Robert Moore in the English dub.
A follow-up anime might have a whole new cast of characters or could focus on any remaining characters from the first season.
At least one prequel manga and one sequel manga have previously done so — “Death Note: Another Note – The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases” is told by Mello. In contrast, “Death Note: The a-Kira Story” involves Ryuk and Near prominently.
Death Note Season 2 Plot
The anime’s end sees the death of Light, who is shot by Matsuda (Ryô Naitô/Vincent Tong) while attempting to jot down names on strips of paper from the Death Note he had hidden in his watch.
While Light is screaming in pain on the floor, Ryuk inscribes Light’s name in the Death Note. Light succumbs to cardiac death shortly afterward while seeing images of his rival, the deceased investigator L.

With both of the first season’s protagonists now deceased, the program would have to adapt one of numerous prequel or sequel mangas or create a new tale.
Apart from “Death Note: The a-Kira Story” — which takes place ten years after the events of the original “Death Note” — and “The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases,” there is also the one-shot “Chapter 109” (alternatively titled “The C-Kira Story”) and the “L File No. 15” book.
The most narratively dense vein is “The a-Kira Story.” Throughout the manga, Minoru Tanaka, a student, acquires the Death Note and decides to sell it to the highest bidder.
Ryuk attempts to prevent the Death Note’s sale, and the world descends into chaos as American and Chinese officials struggle to control the notebook.
