Early Life

Elba was born in London, England on September 6, 1972. He is the child of Eve and Winston Elba who worked at the Ford Dagenham plant. He was brought up in Hackney and East Ham, and when he was attending school in Canning Town where he was incorporated in acting for the first time, he chose to shorten his first name to “Idris”.

In 1999, Elba got married to his first wife Hanne “Kim” Nørgaard and the couple has a child together, a daughter. They separated in 2003. In 2006, Elba got married to Sonya Nicole Hamlin and the duo separated just after four months of marriage.

He also has a son with his former girlfriend, Naiyana Garth. In early 2017, he was in a relationship with model Sabrina Dhowre and later in 2018, they got engaged at an East London cinema during a screening of his film Yardie. In 2019, the couple got married in Marrakesh.

In 1994, Elba made his acting debut, with British television series like Absolutely Fabulous, Crimewatch, Bramwell, The Bill, and Family Affairs. Following his appearances in Ultraviolet and Dangerfield, he later moved to New York City.

In the U.S., he established himself with a theater role in a production of Troilus and Cressida. Following it, he landed a supporting role on the show titled Law & Order prior to landing one of his most popular roles in The Wire.

During the period 2002 to 2004, he played the role of Russell “Stringer” Bell which brought him popularity in the U.S.

After The Wire, Elba landed a significant role in the 2005 film titled Sometimes in April which is about the Rwandan genocide. Later, he landed a role in the film titled The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, which was shot in Botswana.
