On September 27, 1984, in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, Avril Ramona Lavigne was born Avril Ramona Lavigne. She was raised by her mother, Judith-Rosanne, father, Jean-Claude, an elder brother Matthew and a younger sister Michelle. When Avril was five years old, her family relocated to the small town of Greater Napanee, Ontario.

Her father renovated the basement of their home into a music studio and purchased her a microphone, piano, drum equipment, and a few guitars. Lavigne began singing renditions of Garth Brooks and Shania Twain at country festivals and penning her songs shortly after that.

Avril joined a radio competition at the age of 14 and earned the chance to perform live with Twain. Lavigne also liked hockey throughout her youth, earning MVP honors twice while competing in a boys league.

Avril Lavigne Career:

In December 1999, Lavigne joined her first manager, Cliff Fabri, after he witnessed her singing cover songs in a bookshop. He distributed Avril’s home performances videotapes to industry connections. Mark Jowett of the Canadian management company Nettwerk arranged for Lavigne to travel to New York in the summer of 2000 to work with producer/songwriter Peter Zizzo.

In November of that year, Ken Krongard brought Antonio “L.A.” Reid, the CEO of Arista Records, to hear Avril perform in Zizzo’s studio. He signed her to a $1.25 million record deal and a $900,000 publishing advance. Lavigne completed recording her debut album, “Let Go,” in January 2002, and it debuted at number two on the “Billboard” 200 lists upon its June release.

By the end of the year, the album had reached No. 1 in Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. It had been certified four-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) (and 7-times platinum by 2018). Avril was the year’s best-selling female artist, and her first album, “Let Go,” sold more copies than any other that year.

Her breakthrough song, “Complicated,” peaked at #1 in Australia and #2 in the United States, while “I’m with You” and “Sk8er Boi” charted in the top ten, making Lavigne just the second artist to have three top ten singles from a debut album on the “Billboard” Mainstream Top 40 list. Avril was featured on the March 2003 cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

Lavigne followed “Let Go” with “Under My Skin” (2004), “The Best Damn Thing” (2007), “Goodbye Lullaby” (2011), “Avril Lavigne” (2013), and “Head Above Water” (2019), as well as multiple chart-topping songs such as “My Happy Ending” and “Girlfriend. Avril launched her apparel brand, Abbey Dawn, in 2008 and has already launched three fragrances: Black Star, Forbidden Rose, and Wild Rose.

Lavigne is well-known for her activism, having volunteered with Amnesty International, War Child, Erase MS, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, among other humanitarian groups. In 2014, she celebrated her birthday by organizing a fundraising drive for Special Olympics, which raised enough money to send 30 competitors to the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games. Avril later included the athletes in her music video for “Fly” and donated the single’s iTunes sales revenues to the Special Olympics.

On July 15, 2006, Avril married Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley, and the couple divorced in November 2010. When Lavigne was 17 years old, the duo met and began dating two years later. In July, Avril dated Brody Jenner for two years before dating Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger. Lavigne and Kroeger became engaged barely one month into their romance and married on July 1, 2013, in the south of France. They filed for divorce in 2015.

Lavigne has been candid about her struggle with Lyme illness, for which she was diagnosed in 2014. She has stated that she was bedridden for five months and believed she would die, and she has been dedicated to spreading awareness about the condition since her diagnosis.

Lavigne has earned over 160 honors, including six ASCAP, seven BMI, eight Juno, and six World Music Awards. In 2004, she set the Guinness World Record for the Youngest Female to Have a Number One Album in the United Kingdom. Her song “Complicated” won an International Achievement Award at the SOCAN Awards.

She has been nominated for eight Grammys and was named #10 on “Billboard” magazine’s “Best of the 2000s” list in the “Pop Artist” category in 2009. Her 2007 song “Girlfriend” video was the first to surpass one million views on YouTube. Avril was ranked #84 on VH1’s 2012 “The 100 Greatest Women In Music” special.

In 2020, five years after their divorce, Lavigne, and Kroeger sold their Sherman Oaks, California, house for $5 million. They purchased it in 2015 for $5.6 million. Lavigne and Derek Whibley purchased Travis Barker’s Bel Air mansion for $9.5 million in 2007. In 2012, they sold it for $8.5 million.

Avril purchased a Beverly Hills mansion for $4.5 million in 2004. In 2008, she sold this house for $5.2 million. Avril spent $7.8 million in November 2020 for a Malibu house.
