Early Life

Cage was born on January 7, 1964, in Long Beach, California. He is the child of Joy Vogelsang and August Coppola. His father was a professor of literature whereas his mother was a dancer and choreographer.

He has two siblings, his brothers, Marc “The Cope” Coppola, a New York radio personality, and Christopher Coppola who is a director. He went to attend Beverly Hills High School, which is popular for its several alumni who became entertainers.

When he was young, he wanted to act and also went to attend UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television. During his school days, he did his first non-cinematic acting in a school production of Golden Boy.

He stated that he began acting as he “wanted to be James Dean. I saw him in Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden. Nothing affected me—no rock song, no classical music—the way Dean affected me in Eden. It blew my mind. I was like, ‘That’s what I want to do’.”

When he was 15, he attempted to persuade his uncle, Francis Ford Coppola, to provide him with a screen test, telling him “I’ll show you acting.” His outbreak was met with “silence in the car”.

By this time, he had already helmed Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, and Robert De Niro. However, during the initial time of his career, he was seen in a few of his uncle’s movies, he switched his name to Nicholas Cage in order to bypass the appearance of nepotism for being Coppola’s nephew and was partly inspired by the Marvel Comics superhero Luke Cage and composer John Cage.
