Early Life

Federer was born in Basel, Switzerland on August 8, 1981. He is the child of Robert Federer and Lynette Federer. He has an older sister, Diana. As his mother hails from South Africa, he has both Swiss and South African citizenship.

He was raised nearby Birsfelden, Riehen, and later moved to Münchenstein, near French and German borders, and he knows multiple languages including Swiss German, Standard German, is fluent in English and French, and also speaks functional Italian and Swedish.

His native language is Swiss German. In 1992 and 1993, he was a ball boy at his hometown Basel tournament, the Swiss Indoors.

Similar to all male Swiss citizens, he was bound by mandatory military service in the Swiss Armed Forces. Although, in 2003 he was determined “unsuitable” and hence, no military obligation was required to be fulfilled him.

Generally called Mirka, in 2002, she announced her retirement from the tour after she suffered a foot injury. The couple got married on April 11, 2009, at Wenkenhof Villa in Riehen near Basel, and the ceremony was attended by just a few close friends and family.

In the same year, the couple welcomed identical twin girls. In 2014, they welcomed another pair of identical twin boys.

From a very early age, Federer started to play tennis with his parents and elder sister Diana and very soon realized his extreme talent for the sport.

When he was 8, Roger joined the Basel junior tennis program and at the age of 10, he met Peter Carter, an Australian player who observed Federer’s potential, and for the next 4 years, they trained together.

When Federer was 13, he accepted an invitation to go to Switzerland’s national tennis training center. During that time, the training center was 2 hours away from his home in a part of Switzerland that talked majorly French.

There, he got training for 3 years and then, a new facility was inaugurated near his home in Biel. At the new training center, Peter Carter was among the instructors and his guidance led Federer to make his way to the world’s top junior rankings quite soon.

As an amateur, he became the winner of the Wimbledon junior singles and double titles, and apparently, he ranked the number one ITF player in the world.

Quickly after he became an expert in 1999, he made it to the semifinals of a tournament in Vienna. After he enjoyed a few more high-profile wins; Federer became the youngest member of the ATP’s top 100.

Federer suffered a knee injury and had to undergo surgery to repair torn ligaments. In July of the same year, he declared he would not be able to participate in the 2016 Olympics and the rest of the season to recover from his knee injury.

Federer played in the Hopman Cup and the Australian Open in 2017. He triumphed at the Australian Open, after beating Rafael Nadal in the final, marking his 100th match at the game.

In the 2018 Shanghai Masters, Federer was defeated in the semifinals by Borna Coric. In the same year, he played the French Open for the first time in the last four years. He made his way to the semifinals but was defeated by 11-time champion Nadal.

That year, he didn’t participate in the Olympics in Rio because he was recovering from yet another knee injury.

In 2020, Federer started his season at the 2020 Australian Open, and Djokovic defeated him in the semifinal match and he again had another knee injury. Later, since he needed time to recover from his knee injury, he withdrew from further competitions.
