Early Life

John Legend was born in Springfield, Ohio on December 28, 1978. He is the son of Phyllis and Ronald Lamar Stephens. His father was a factory worker at International Harvester. His father used to play the drum, whereas “his mother sang and directed the church choir, and his grandmother was the church organist.”

He said back in 2004, that for a period of twelve years, his parents were divorced prior to reuniting. His mother homeschooled him and when he was 4, he started to play the piano. He performed with his church choir when he was 7. He also skipped two grades as he was extremely strong in his studies.

When he was 12, he went to attend North High School in Springfield, Ohio, and there, he completed his graduation as salutatorian of his class after 4 years.

When he was 15, he gained victory in a Black History Month essay competition held by McDonald, after the prompt “How do you intend to make Black history?” with an essay regarding how he planned to be a prominent musician, as per an interview on the Carlos Watson Show.

He was offered admission to Harvard University and scholarships for Georgetown University and Morehouse College; and eventually, he took the decision to go to the University of Pennsylvania.

Legend was the president and musical director of the co-ed jazz and pop a cappella group the Counterparts at college.

On the group’s recording of Joan Osborne’s “One of Us” which is written by fellow Penn alum Eric Bazilian of the Hooters, his lead vocals got critical acclaim, and the song landed on the tracklist of the 1998 Best of Collegiate a Cappella compilation CD.

Furthermore, he was also a member of the Sphinx Senior Society and Onyx Senior Honor Society. Legend’s friend introduced him to Lauryn Hill while he was in college and he was hired by Hill to play piano for a song titled “Everything Is Everything”, from her album entitled “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”. Legend graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in English in 1999.

Personal Life

In 2006, director Nabil Elderkin introduced Legend to model Chrissy Teigen during her appearance in the music video for his song titled “Stereo”. In December 2011, the duo got engaged and in 2013 they got married in Como, Italy.

He wrote the song titled “All of Me” which was released in 2013, was for her and is also dedicated to her. As per reports, the music video was showcased at their wedding. In 2016, they welcomed their first child, a daughter and in 2018, Chrissy gave birth to a son.

Both times, Chrissy conceived with the help of in vitro fertilization. In August 2020, the couple made the announcement that they were expecting a third child, and on September 29, 2020, their son was born dead because of complications and the couple confirmed that they had named him Jack.

John and Chrissy enlisted a duplex New York City apartment on the market for a consideration of $18 million in January 2022. Originally, the property was 2 apartments. In 2018, the couple bought the first apartment, and later in 2020, they bought the second one. In order to acquire the two apartments, the duo spent an aggregate amount of $16.70 million.

Following Legend completing his college, he started working as a management consultant whilst he began producing, writing, and recording his own music. In 2000, he released his self-titled demo and “Live at Jimmy’s Uptown” 2001.

Soon, he started to send his demo to record labels and he was introduced to Kanye West in 2001, who was a then-an-up-and-coming-hip-hop artist. Legend was hired by West to sing the hooks in his songs. He was also signed by West to his label.

In late 2004, he dropped his debut album entitled Get Lifted, on GOOD Music. It was produced by Kanye West, Dave Tozer, and will.i.am, and ranked number seven on the Billboard 200 in the United States, with the sale of 116,000 copies within its first week.

It continued to sell 540,300 copies in the U.S and RIAA also certified it gold. The album gained success on an international level and peaked at number 1 on the Norwegian Albums Chart and ranked within the top ten in the Netherlands and Sweden, which led to sales of 850,000 copies worldwide.

The album was critically acclaimed and also brought Legend the 2006 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, and also brought him the other 2 nominal awards for “Best New Artist” and “Best Male R&B Vocal Performance”.

Overall, the album consisted of 4 singles, along with the debut single entitled “Used to Love U”, which peaked in the top 30 of the New Zealand and the United Kingdom Singles Chart, and the single titled “Ordinary People” which won Grammy Award, ranked number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.

He released his album entitled “Love in the Future,” in 2013 which peaked at number two in the United States and the United Kingdom. “All of Me,” which was the third single from the album, gained success internationally.

Furthermore, the song was also performed by him at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards. In the following year “All of Me” became the third best-selling song in the United States and the United Kingdom.

In 2016, his album entitled “Darkness and Light” and his album entitled “A Legendary Christmas” were released in 2018.

In 2019, he became the winning coach on “The Voice” alongside his artist Maelyn Jarmon. Legend was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in November 2019.

Legend gave a performance in a special Quarantunes benefit concert in 2020. In the same year, he performed Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love of All ” alongside Andra Day at a fundraiser for Joe Biden’s presidential campaign.
