Conor McGregor born Conor Anthony McGregor is a professional Irish mixed martial artist. He is a former Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight and lightweight double-champion, along with that, he is also the former Cage Warriors featherweight and lightweight champion. 

In the UFC lightweight rankings, McGregor is ranked number 9 as of 19 July 2021.

Early Life

McGregor was born on 14 July 1988 in Crumlin, Dublin, to Tony and Margaret McGregor.

When he was young, he used to play football for Lourdes Celtic Football Club and he also started boxing at Crumlin Boxing Club when he was 12 to learn to protect himself against bullies and uplift his confidence. 

He relocated to Lucan, Dublin, with his family in 2006 and attended Gaelcholáiste Coláiste Cois Life. After that, he began a plumbing apprenticeship. 

Personal Life

McGregor has two sisters named Erin and Aoife. Since 2008, he has been in a relationship with his fiancée, Dee Devlin and the couple have three kids together named Conor Jr, Croía, and Rían.

At the Mjölnir gym in Reykjavík, he frequently trains beside fellow UFC fighter Gunnar Nelson. He said that none of the pre-fight rituals or superstitions are being adhered to by him ever as he thinks them to be “a form of fear”.

He has also an interest in football and supports both Celtic and Manchester United. Additionally, being Sergio Ramos’ friend is also a supporter of Paris Saint-Germain. 

Career

When McGregor was 18, he debuted his mixed martial arts in an amateur fight against Kieran Campbell for the Irish Ring of Truth promotion in Dublin on February 17, 2007, and he got victory through technical knockout (TKO) in the first round.

He had his first professional MMA bout, as a lightweight, on March 9, 2008, and defeated Gary Morris in the second round via TKO. 

After winning his second fight against Mo Taylor, he debuted his featherweight in a loss through kneebar against submission specialist Artemij Sitenkov.

During 2011 and 2012, he continued an eight-fight winning sequence during which McGregor triumph both the CWFC Featherweight and Lightweight championships, and with this, he became the first European professional mixed martial artist who had titles in two divisions together.

In February 2013, the announcement was made by the Ultimate Fighting Championship that McGregor was signed for a multi-fight contract and he became the second fighter from Ireland to compete for the company after Tom Egan, his fellow team member.

He debuted his UFC on April 6, 2013, against Marcus Brimage at UFC on Fuel TV: Mousasi versus Latifi and won the fight in the first round via knockout and that win brought him his first award for “Knockout of the Night.”

On August 17, 2013, McGregor was supposed to compete with Andy Ogle at UFC Fight Night 26, however, Ogle was withdrawn from the fight as he had an injury and UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway replaced him.

The fight was won by McGregor by a unanimous decision (30–27, 30–27, and 30–26). After fighting against Holloway, it was disclosed with an MRI scan that McGregor had torn his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while fighting, and surgery would be required and he had to take a break for nearly 10 months. 

On July 19, 2014, McGregor was supposed to compete against Cole Miller at UFC Fight Night 46 in his returning fight after he recovered from his ACL injury.

But Miller was removed from the fight given a thumb injury and Diego Brandão came as his replacement. McGregor fought with Brandão at The O2 in his hometown of Dublin, Ireland.

Referee Leon Roberts stopped the fight formally at 4:05 of round one and that victory brought McGregor his first award for “Performance of the Night.”

Ahead of the next fight, McGregor and Lorenzo Fertitta met and a new multi-fight contract was signed by him with the UFC. After that, on 27 September 2014, he fought with Dustin Poirier at UFC 178.

In spite of McGregor having nine remarkable strikes to Poirier’s 10, he won in the first round, by coercing Poirier onto his back foot, prior to smashing with a left hook behind Poirier’s ear, compelling referee Herb Dean to intervene.

In the first round, the official finish came at 1:46 and this was Poirier’s first UFC loss through KO/TKO, and that win brought McGregor his second award for “Performance of the Night.”

On January 18, 2015. McGregor fought with Dennis Siver at UFC Fight Night 59 and triumphed in the second round through TKO. This win also got him the third award for “Performance of the Night.” 

On March 5, 2016, McGregor faced Nate Diaz who is the winner of Ultimate Fighter Season 5, and also the former UFC Lightweight Championship challenger at UFC 196 in a welterweight fight.

The bout started with a combination in round one, Diaz returned fire with two continuous hooks, one a slap, a signature of Nate and Nick Diaz, his brother, called the “Stockton Slap”.

McGregor succeeded with his bodywork, but Diaz started to try combinations of his own. Following a one-two punch from Diaz, McGregor tried a double leg takedown, which was defended by Diaz via sprawling.

Then, Diaz threatened the guillotine choke and that pushed McGregor onto his back following halting McGregor from bustling and Diaz defended the mount and a rear-naked choke.

In the second round, McGregor knocked into submission at 4:12. Both of them received the award for “Fight of the Night” bonuses, and McGregor got the highest disclosed purse of any fighter in the company’s history to that point, at $1,000,000.

McGregor criticized his own performance and praised Diaz, he said: “I was inefficient with my energy. It was a battle of energy and he got the better of that.”

McGregor took to social media to make the announcement of his retirement on March 26, 2019. Although, this announcement was seen by Dana White as a trick to get an ownership stake in the company.

Later, White recommended that his retirement wouldn’t remain for long and he had been in frequent touch with him and said he would make a comeback again in the future. Previously, McGregor had tweeted that he sought a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov and would face him in the Octagon.

On January 18, 2020, following being away from the Octagon for over a year, McGregor fought with Donald Cerrone in a welterweight fight at UFC 246 and won the bout in round one through technical knockout at 40 seconds and that victory got him a Performance of the Night award and with this McGregor became the first UFC fighter to carry knockout finishes in the featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight divisions.

He made the announcement of retirement from bout again on June 6, 2020.

In spite of talks of retirement, McGregor faced Dustin Poirier on January 24, 2021, who is the former UFC Lightweight Championship challenger in a rematch of their 2014 fight at UFC 257.

In the second round, he lost the bout through technical knockout, and that was his first knockout defeat in his career. Later, he faced a suspension of 6 months following the knockout.

On July 10, 2021, he fought with Dustin Poirier for a third time at UFC 264, and McGregor was defeated in the fight through technical knockout in the first round following the ringside doctor halted the fight. McGregor had a broken tibia, and that made him incompetent to continue.
