Tomb Raider 2 Release Date Status, Cast, Plot – All We Know So Far

Tomb Raider 2 is making tentative progress following its indefinite postponement from its original March 2021 release date.

Following the delay, it was reported in January 2021 that Misha Green, the showrunner for Lovecraft Country, will take over as director from Ben Wheatley. Green is also writing the sequel, taking over from Amy Jump, who worked on the Wheatley adaptation.

Green stated in May 2021 that she had completed the first draught of the sequel, titled Tomb Raider: Obsidian.

“Title hasn’t even been authorized,” she continued, so we’ll have to wait and see whether that becomes the film’s actual title when it is released. Meanwhile, here is all you need to know about Tomb Raider 2.

Tomb Raider 2 Cast: Who is Returning?

While Alicia Vikander will undoubtedly reprise her role as Lara Croft, it is less certain who will return to other roles. If the sequel continues where the original film ended (more on that later), Kristin Scott Thomas will reprise her role as Ana Miller.

Dominic West is unlikely to reprise his role as Lara Croft’s father, Lord Richard Croft, following his self-sacrifice to save his daughter. At the same time, antagonist Mathias Vogel (Walton Goggins) also perished in the first film.

Perhaps Daniel Wu will reprise his role as Lu Ren, the ship captain who assisted Lara in locating her father and fleeing Yamatai.

If Vikander had her way, we might also witness an Angelina Jolie meta-cameo: “I’m not against! As much as I like Angelina, we’ll see; we should surely inquire.”

When will Tomb Raider 2 be Released?

When Wheatley was revealed as the director, a release date of March 19, 2021, was also announced.

Given that production had not yet begun, it was unsurprising that the film was finally postponed indefinitely. While Misha Green has taken over as writer/director, there is still no confirmation of a release date.

Vikander started in July 2021 that while the sequel has not been formally greenlit, everything is in place for it to happen: “The screenplay is in the works, and I believe everyone is enthusiastic, and I would love to explore Lara once again.”

It took more than a year from the first film to its release. When Tomb Raider 2 is completed, it will likely take a little more than a year until it is released.

It’s important emphasizing that this is just supposition, as nothing beyond the postponement has been verified. We will not know anything for definite until that occurs.

Ana Miller, Lara’s father’s business partner, is the head of Patna, and Lara discovers that Ana collaborated with Vogel and Trinity during their whole conspiracy.

Thus, Lara purchases the video game’s distinctive twin weapons in the credits sequence, determined to continue her father’s mission to fight Trinity.

It remains to be seen whether the sequel continues this thread of Lara’s war with Trinity. Still, there is also the possibility that the sequel may establish a new tomb and quest for Lara, entirely disconnected from the events of the first film.

It might potentially be influenced by the Rise of the Tomb Raider video game sequel, as the previous film was heavily influenced by Crystal Dynamics’ 2013 relaunch of the gaming brand.

In that game, Lara travels to the abandoned city of Kitezh in pursuit of her father’s research into immortality – and the Divine Source, a supernatural MacGuffin capable of granting it. Misha Green has stated that she is a fan of the game, so take that for its worth.

Whatever the project’s subject is, Vikander is ecstatic about the thought of collaborating with Green on a “really big-ass picture.”

You may hunt all you want, but there will be no trailer for some time. The sequel has not begun filming, and production depends entirely on *gestures vaguely at the world*. Sigh.
