AdminBy AdminMarch 17, 20224 Mins Read

Girl in the Basement, a new film based on the terrible story of Elisabeth Fritzl, a young lady who was held hostage by her father for over 25 years, continues Lifetime’s “Ripped From the Headlines” marathon.

As with many previous Lifetime films, Girl in the Basement dramatizes Elisabeth Fritzl’s true story while altering, deleting, and rewriting important portions of her narrative.

Regardless of its faults, Girl in the Basement is an eerie movie, and the true tale is much more heartbreaking. What is the actual tale of the Girl in the Basement? Where is Elisabeth Fritzl from Girl in the Basement now? Everything you need to know is included here.

Lifetime Girl In The Basement Plot

Girl in the Basement is a Lifetime Original Movie about Sara (Stefanie Scott), a suburban adolescent imprisoned in her home’s Basement by her father, Don (Judd Nelson).

Don tells his wife Irene (Joely Fisher) that Sara ran away, but she is actually being held hostage, and he tortures and rapes her regularly throughout the next two decades.

Sara has multiple children as a consequence, and Don and Irene begin caring for her youngest kid, despite Irene believing Sara sent him to them from another part of the nation.

When Sara is eventually allowed to flee, the world knows her story, and her family is forced to confront the reality of what has occurred.

True Story Of Lifetime Girl In The Basement

The narrative of Elisabeth Fritzl, a young Austrian lady who was imprisoned by her father, Josef Fritzl, from 1984 to 2008, is based on fact. According to Oxygen, Josef enticed Elisabeth to their home’s Basement on August 28, 1984, and placed an ether-soaked cloth on her face; when she passed out, he shackled her and confined her underground jail.

Josef then persuaded Elisabeth into sending a letter to her mother, Rosemarie, claiming that she had fled her birthplace of Amstetten, Austria, and was not interested in being found.

Josef sexually raped Elisabeth practically every day for the following 24 years. Kerstin was born in 1988, and she went on to have six additional children — Stefan, Lisa, Monika, Alexander, Michael, and Felix — but Michael died three days after delivery.

Josef eventually took several of the children from the Basement and informed Rosemarie that they had been sent by Elisabeth, who required assistance in raising them. Rosemarie trusted him, and the children were placed in their care as foundlings.

Elisabeth emerged from the cellar for the first time on April 19, 2008, after her eldest daughter, Kerstin, lost consciousness. She returned to the Basement immediately after Kerstin was admitted to the hospital but was summoned to the police for interrogation one week later when medical workers raised concerns with authorities.

Elisabeth narrated her tragic ordeal over many hours, and on April 26, her father was arrested.

Josef pleaded guilty to murder charges for his carelessness with Michael’s death and charges relating to Elisabeth’s slavery, incest, rape, coercion, and false imprisonment less than a year after his arrest. He was condemned to life imprisonment in Garsten Abbey, where he continues to serve his sentence.

Lifetime Girl In The Basement: Where is Elisabeth Fritzl?

Elisabeth Fritzl was renamed Elisabeth Fritzl following the trial to protect her anonymity. She now lives with her six children in an undisclosed hamlet in Austria dubbed “Village X” by the media.

“The youngsters, now aged 17 to 31, sleep in rooms with permanently open doors following weekly treatment sessions aimed at eradicating the traumas they endured inside the underground,” said in 2019.

“Their two-story family home is constantly monitored by CCTV and guarded by security guards, and any stranger seen prowling around may anticipate being apprehended by police within minutes.”

Fritzl is also dating her former bodyguard, Thomas Wagner, who currently resides with her and her family.

How To Watch Lifetime Girl In The Basement?

Girl in the Basement premiered on Lifetime on Saturday, February 27, but there are still a couple of ways to view it. The new Elisabeth Fritzl film is available to stream on the Lifetime website and Lifetime app, but viewing requires a cable subscription.

Girl in the Basement is not yet available to view on Netflix. On the other hand, Cord cutters may watch the Lifetime film provided they have a current membership to Hulu+ Live TV or Philo, both of which offer free trials to new consumers.
