When music transports you back to the first time you heard it, you know it’s excellent.
Certain songs can transport you back in time, and Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me” accomplishes just that for me, as it does for so many others.
With that stated, Lambert shook our worlds with the song twelve years ago Today, in 2010.
The song, which is about returning to the home where she grew up, was initially slated to be sung by Blake Shelton. However, when she first heard the music, she knew she couldn’t pass it up since it affected her deeply.
In an interview with Today, she stated:
“It was beautiful… I mean, I just started bawling from the second I heard it. (Shelton) was like, ‘If you have a reaction to this song like that, then you need to cut it.”
Released as the third single from her 2009 album Revolution, the subdued “The House That Built Me” was a break from the album’s previous single, the confrontational “White Liar.”

A tenderhearted, nostalgic look back on the home she grew up in and how it affected her life, “The House That Built Me” is a song that leans heavily on the lyrics rather than the music’s force. Miranda’s performance garnered her the CMA and ACM Song of the Year awards, as well as the Grammy for “Best Female Country Vocal Performance.”
Needless to say, “The House That Built Me” revealed a more vulnerable side to Lambert and gave us an inside look at what matters to her.
And many would argue that it is still the biggest and most significant song she has ever released.
“The House That Built Me” has since established itself as one of Miranda’s signature songs, eliciting emotional responses from both fans and Miranda herself 11 years after its initial release.
