Apple iPhone SE (2022) vs. iPhone SE (2020): A Comparative Analysis

Apple just revealed the next iteration of the iPhone SE, complete with an A15 Bionic chip and 5G connection, but how does it stack up against the 2020 release of the second-generation iPhone SE? Discover the difference between the iPhone SE 3 (2022) and the iPhone SE 2 in this quick comparison (2020).

Apple’s iPhone SE has long been an entry-level smartphone with a tiny form, budget-friendly specifications, and a cheap price tag that allows new consumers to experience the iPhone.

The new iPhone SE keeps the gimmick but is powered by the same chipset as the iPhone 13 range. Additionally, there are enhancements to the camera, battery, and performance and the addition of a 5G connection.

Additionally, Apple discontinued the iPhone SE 2020 with the release of the following model. However, are the enhancements sufficient for people to go from the iPhone SE Gen 2 to the iPhone SE Gen 3? Let us investigate.

Performance & Efficiency of the iPhone SE (2022) vs. the iPhone SE (2020)

The iPhone SE 2020 was powered by the Apple A13 Bionic, the same chip used in the iPhone 11 at the time. It was a 7nm Hexa-core CPU with two high-performance cores and four low-power cores.

Additionally, it included Apple’s four-core GPU and eight-core Neural engine, which combined for a total of 8.5 billion transistors.

The iPhone SE 2022 is powered by Apple’s newest A15 Bionic technology, which is also found in the current-generation iPhone 13 series.

Additionally, it features six cores, two of which are high-performance and four energy-efficient. It does, however, have a 16-core Neural Engine that is capable of doing 15.8 trillion operations per second.

There is a noticeable performance boost since the A15 is quicker than the A13. The Geekbench results for both CPUs are identical. The iPhone SE scores 1,312 in the single-core test, whereas the iPhone 13 with the A15 Bionic scores 1,671.

Despite the new iPhone SE’s faster CPU and incorporation of cutting-edge technology, it boasts a longer battery life and playback time than its predecessor.

Apple states that the iPhone SE Gen 3 has a 15-hour battery life, two hours more than the iPhone SE Gen 2.

With the iPhone SE 2020, Apple included wireless charging capability through Qi chargers and support for rapid charging up to 18W.

This statistic has remained constant with the release of the iPhone SE 2022. There were rumors that the new device would feature MagSafe, but that did not materialize.

The new iPhone SE retains the previous generation’s camera specs. There is a 12MP Wide camera on the back with an f/1.8 aperture and a 7MP camera with an f/2.2 aperture, identical to the iPhone SE 2020.

However, there is an upgrade with the current model, which has the A15 Bionic processor for improved picture signal processing. The iPhone SE 2022′s rear camera has advancements to Deep Fusion computational photography and Smart HDR 4 and Photographic Styles.

While the second-generation iPhone SE supported just 5x digital zoom, True Tone Flash, Smart HDR pictures, and Portrait mode with Depth Control and Portrait Lighting, the new iPhone SE supports all of these features. These features are also available on the iPhone SE 5G, which was just announced.

iPhone SE already included a Retina Flash, FaceTime HD compatibility, and 1080p30 video recording on the front camera. The updated iPhone SE supports Smart HDR, Photographic Styles, 120fps 1080p Slo-mo, and Deep Fusion, all thanks to the A15 processor.

Capabilities for video recording have remained constant. The iPhone SE 2022, like the 2020 model, supports 4K video recording at up to 60 frames per second and 1080p slo-mo video recording at 240 frames per second. As originally predicted, the Cinematic Mode is not included.

The newest iPhone SE 2022 keeps the classic-old design debuted in September 2016 with the iPhone 7 series. Additionally, the Home button has survived another iPhone SE generation.

The iPhone SE Gen 3 is 5.45 inches long, 2.65 inches wide, and 0.29 inches thick, the same as the 2020 model. The new smartphone weighs 5.09 ounces less than the second-generation iPhone SE, which weighed 5.22 ounces.

The same bigger bezels and top and bottom remain since the new tablet lacks an edge-to-edge display. The material is also the same, with an aluminum finish and front and rear glass panels. Given the entry-level pricing point, there are no surprises here.

This features a resolution of 1,334 by 750, a pixel density of 326ppi, a contrast ratio of 1,400:1, and a brightness of 625 nits. Both models support True Tone and Wide Color (P3).

The color palette is the primary design distinction between the iPhone SE 2022 and the iPhone 2020. The iPhone SE 2 came in Black and White, whereas the SE 3 comes in Midnight and Starlight. The (Product) Red color scheme stays the same across both variants.

5G Connectivity on the iPhone SE (2022) compared to iPhone SE (2020)

The most significant change to the iPhone SE 2022 is adding a 5G connection. It will, however, support only sub-6GHz bands and not mmWave 5G. Thus, while it is technically a 5G gadget, you will not enjoy lightning-fast mega-Gbps rates.

The iPhone SE 2020 was not compatible with 5G and was only compatible with LTE. The good news is that the most recent iPhone SE supports Advanced LTE. This would assist people who lack access to the next-generation 5G network in their location.

Apple is promoting the new iPhone SE’s 5G connection as the primary reason people upgrade. It does make the gadget somewhat future-proof, but we do not believe it is necessary given the 5G rollouts.

Apart from wireless connectivity, both iPhone SE models offer Wi-Fi 6 with MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, and near-field communication (NFC) for Apple Pay. The iPhone SE 3 supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, and BeiDou, whereas the iPhone SE supports just GPS/GNSS.

The pricing is a significant distinction between the iPhone SE (2022) and the iPhone SE (2022). Apple increased the price of the newest model by $30 and added a higher capacity model.

The iPhone SE Gen 2 was offered in only two storage capacities: 64GB for $399 and 128GB for $449. On the other hand, the iPhone SE Gen 3 comes in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB storage configurations. They have a suggested retail price of $429, $479, and $579, respectively.

Is It Worth It to Upgrade From An iPhone Se 2 to an iPhone Se 3?

Apple’s iPhone SE Gen 3 is marginally better than its predecessor, the iPhone SE Gen 2, released in 2020. The current model features the powerful A15 Bionic chip, whereas the previous generation had the A13 Bionic.

Additionally, there are substantial enhancements to the camera, battery, and 5G connection.

However, suppose you purchased the iPhone SE 2020 a year or two ago. In that case, we don’t see a compelling reason to upgrade to the iPhone SE 2022 unless you’re concerned about a 5G connection and no longer want Apple to use a smartphone that supports only LTE.

If you desire more power, economy, and improved camera performance, you may still upgrade to the current iPhone SE. Apart from that, there isn’t a compelling reason to upgrade.
