Introduction About the Movie
2022 is a massive year for both HBO Max and the DC Extended Universe! Fresh from James Gunn’s globally praised The Suicide Squad subsidiary series Peacemaker, this thrilling multimedia shared universe will see the release of Batgirl, the first feature movie in the franchise that will only be accessible to stream on WarnerMedia’s top streaming platform.
Written by Christina Hodson and directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah this film is significant because it notes Warner Bros and DC Films’ first trial to bring Barbara Gordon to the DCEU, in spite of the fact that the upcoming solo Batman movie is sure to release in its own shared universe and that Ben Affleck has no willingness in taking up the role after The Flash, which is also scheduled to release subsequently this year.
This guide has answers to all the doubts you may have about Batgirl including when it will come out, who’s in the cast, and which other DC characters can be expected in the movie.
When Will Batgirl Be Released?
The actual date for Batgirl is not out yet. However, we know that the movie will release on HBO Max sometime in 2022.
While some fans of Batgirl may be upset to know that their favourite comic book character won’t be taken up for the big screen, this release schedule may also turn out to be a source of comfort to regular cinema visitors who are still doubtful about visiting a film theater amidst a global pandemic.
Is There a Batgirl Trailer?
We’re still in the initial days of shooting Batgirl, so there is no trailer for the film yet. But watch out for this because we will be updating it with the latest teasers and trailers when they come out.
Who Is in the Batgirl Cast?
Some of these casting publications are very recent, so this may not be the entire cast. However, the chief cast so far has Leslie Grace, Brendan Fraser, J.K. Simmons, Ivory Aquino, and Michael Keaton. Jacob Scipio, Corey Johnson, Rebecca Front, and Ethan Kai will also feature in roles unrevealed, with Kai’s role rumored to be the most important among the four.
Who Are the Confirmed Characters in Batgirl?
Batgirl will showcase all the latest additions to the DCEU, including the main character herself as well as the comeback of certain known characters. While more characters could be confirmed to feature in the movie leading up to its release, here are short summaries for all the Batgirl characters who are certain at the moment.
Leslie Grace will portray Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, surpassing the likes of Haley Lu Richardson, Zoey Deutch, and Isabela Merced. For those who are unaware, Barbara is the daughter of Gotham City Police Department commissioner Jim Gordon and appears as a female version of Batman to battle crime and rescue the citizens of Gotham.
Though Barbara is not the only DC Comics character to assume the Batgirl role, she is definitely the most famous among comic book fans. Brendan Fraser, who now lends his voice to the character of Robotman on the totally unlinked DC series Doom Patrol, will portray the classic Batman antagonist Firefly in Batgirl.
In the post-Crisis DC comics, Garfield Lynns was a pyrotechnics expert in Hollywood whose perilous infatuation with starting fires made him the vicious arsonist called the Firefly. Michael Keaton will re-assume the role of Bruce Wayne/ Batman from both 1989’s Batman and 1992’s Batman Returns.
The actor is already putting his cloak back on for The Flash so if that film is setting up Keaton to replace Affleck as the DCEU’s sole Batman and Batgirl could see his Bruce Wayne become a guide to Barbara Gordon, akin to how he guides Terry McGuinness in the DC Animated Universe.
Ivory Aquino will portray Alysia Yeoh, who was first featured in Gail Simone and Ardian Syaf’s Batgirl comics from 2011.
In that show, Yeoh is a transgender woman who gradually becomes best friends with Barbara Gordon, making her the first chief transgender character in mainstream comic book history and therefore the first transgender role in a live-action DC movie. J.K. Simmons will take up his character of Commissioner Jim Gordon from both editions of Justice League.
Just like the other forms of media, Gordon is the chief of police in Gotham City as well as the father of Barbara and a close supporter of Batman. Simmons was visibly excited about returning to DCEU once again.
When Did Batgirl Begin Filming?
Chief photography from Batgirl started in Glasgow on November 30, 2021, under the brand name Cherry Hill. Two months after the shooting, Grace shared the first official photo of herself in attire on Instagram.
Though it has the same purple and yellow color concept that has been associated with Batgirl over the years, many comic fans have figured out that this appearance has a surprising similarity to Batgirl’s New 52 costume from 2014.
In that comic run, Barbara goes to the hip Gotham borough of Burnside in an attempt to reinvent herself. But Grace gave away shortly after she was featured that she’s not even certain which comic plot this new movie is based on.
Many unratified pictures and clips from the shooting of Batgirl have since been on social media. One such clip shows Barbara, in typical Batman-style, hanging a random criminal from a window to interrogate him.
What Is Batgirl About?
Whereas we don’t know much about the story of Batgirl at this point, producer Kristen Burr teased that the movie would explore a less gloomy and even animated side of Gotham which is not seen in most of the movies of late.
